Escape

The tougher life becomes, the more I find myself daydreaming of escape.

The dictionary tells me that escape means “to get free from something”, and there are days when that definition feels almost painfully simple. If only getting free were as easy in real life as it is on a computer keyboard. We press the key that takes us away from the screen we are on. We tap the “esc” key and interrupt the process.

How I wish life worked like that.

Because if it did, then right about now I would press that key without hesitation and quietly disappear into a different world for a little while. I would find myself in a charming little cottage in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by breathtaking autumn colours, tall trees, crisp air, and the kind of deep silence that wraps itself around you like a blanket. No demands. No noise. No pressure. Just stillness, beauty, and room to breathe again.

Perhaps that is one of the reasons travelling feels so restorative. It gives us a way of stepping outside the tight circles of our ordinary lives. It lifts us, even briefly, out of the routines, responsibilities, and familiar thought patterns that can leave us feeling worn thin. A change of place can also become a change of mind. We leave behind not only our surroundings, but for a moment even the heaviness we have been carrying.

Can you imagine it with me, just for a moment?

No voices. No traffic. No notifications. No need to explain yourself to anyone. Just you, alone in nature, surrounded by the gentle beauty of autumn and the complete absence of sound. The kind of silence that does not feel empty, but full. Full of peace. Full of space. Full of things we have not been able to hear for far too long.

Why is silence so powerful?

Because in silence, our scattered thoughts begin to settle. In silence, clarity returns. In silence, we come back to ourselves.

We live surrounded by noise of every kind. There is the noise of the outside world, and then there is the noise within us — the worries, the questions, the mental lists, the things we try not to think about. Sometimes we fill our lives with sound because silence feels too revealing. Stillness has a way of waking thoughts we have tried to push aside. Yet at the same time, our minds, especially our creative minds, and our souls too, so often ache for silence.

There is something sacred about becoming still enough to hear what is going on inside us.

The quieter we become, the more we can hear.

We hear the truth of our own hearts. We hear the thoughts that have been buried beneath the rush of daily life. We hear what matters, what hurts, what needs healing, and perhaps even what is calling us forward.

Silence is not merely the absence of noise. It is a place of restoration. A place of strength. A place where something tired within us can finally exhale.

And maybe that is why I long for it so deeply.

Because when life feels loud, relentless, and far too heavy, silence feels like mercy.

It feels like something worth reaching for.
