Nineteen- Fiftysix

In the gentle rhythm of 1956 Helsinki, my grandfather, a man of meticulous habits and refined taste, commenced his daily journey. From my grandparents’ snug home on Näkinkuja, he embarked on his morning routine, preparing carefully for the day ahead.

Then a vibrant 15-year-old, my mum filled their home with her youthful exuberance, and it was precisely a decade before my own entrance into the world.

Each morning, my grandfather would rise with the sun, his attire impeccable, complete with his signature hat, a symbol of his attention to detail and pride in presentation. As a businessman, every aspect of his appearance mattered, reflecting his professionalism and dedication to his craft.

With a farewell kiss to my grandmother, who lovingly prepared his ryebread, cheese and coffee breakfast, he set out on his familiar route. Boarding the tram, he embarked on his daily commute to work, the city awakening around him as he traveled through the bustling streets of Helsinki.

Upon completing his day’s work, he would make a detour to the Hakaniemi kauppahalli, a vibrant marketplace teeming with the finest produce. Here, amidst the kaleidoscope of colours and scents, he selected only the freshest ingredients, a testament to his discerning palate and commitment to quality.

As the evening settled upon Näkinkuja, he found solace in the music that filled their home. With his violin and mandolin in hand, he would lose himself in melodies that danced through the air, weaving tales of love, loss, and life’s simple joys.

In his meticulously curated world, every moment held meaning, every action a reflection of his unwavering devotion to excellence.

24 years later, my grandparents migrated to Australia, joining us as we embarked on a new chapter together. And as the echoes of his music faded into the night, his legacy lived on.

It is a lovely picture, rising early in the morning and playing music in the evening.
